Antique copper stainless steel reproduces the deep, reddish-brown patina copper develops with age — dark recesses, warm reddish-brown highlights, and the kind of uneven tonal drift you get from years of oxidation, without the greening that copper eventually takes on outdoors. The base material is stainless steel, not solid copper. We supply this patina copper sheet metal finish across grades 201, 304, 316 and 430.

How the Patina Effect Is Made

The process starts with a base surface texture — polished, hairline, mirror, vibration, embossed, or etched — then goes through PVD coating or water plating to build the copper tone. Oxidation is worked in unevenly on purpose: recesses darken toward a deep red-brown, raised areas stay warmer and lighter, producing the same kind of tonal drift a patinated copper sheet develops naturally over years of handling.

How far this process is taken sets the final depth. A shorter process stays closer to copper's natural warm red-orange, with light variation. Pushed further, it moves into a darker, more weathered reddish-brown with stronger contrast between high and low points. Because this is a range rather than a fixed recipe, we can match it to a specific sample or reference.

Surface Textures of Antique Copper Panels

The patina effect sits on two categories of base surface — flat mechanical finishes and raised relief textures.

Flat Finishes — Hairline, Vibration, Mirror

These finishes carry the wear copper accumulates through handling and time. Hairline and vibration use fine mechanical scratching to echo years of surface contact, while mirror carries the patina coloring over a polished base for a tarnished, clouded look. The coloring process can also produce irregular, mottled patterns directly on the surface, closer to how copper naturally oxidizes outdoors.

About the Antique Copper Process

Stainless steel starts as a grey-silver base. Different combinations of polishing and oxidation coloring produce different depths of copper patina on that same base — which means every antique copper sheet comes out as a one-of-a-kind result.

Our production process:

Start with the customer's specified stainless steel grade (201 / 304 / 316 / 430) as the base
Apply oxidation coloring to build the copper patina tone
Create the aged texture using one of two methods:
- النقش — builds a raised, tactile pattern beneath the patina for genuine dimensional depth
- Standard process — produces a flat, weathered patina on the surface
Hand-finish the surface to refine the mottled, aged character
Apply a protective clear coat to lock in the finish and slow further oxidation

FAQS

Is an antique copper panel made of solid copper?

No. The base material is stainless steel (201/304/316/430); the copper appearance comes from an oxidation coloring process and hand-applied aging technique on the surface. This gives you the patina copper look with the corrosion resistance and durability of stainless steel.

What's the difference between this and your Green Copper finish?

This antique copper finish stays in the red-brown to dark brown range — the early-to-mid stage of copper's natural patina. Our Green Copper finish reproduces the later green oxidation stage. See our Green Copper page if that's the look you need.

Does the antique copper finish have a raised texture, or is it flat?

Both are available. Our etched finish builds a raised, tactile pattern beneath the patina for a genuinely dimensional feel, while our standard process produces a flat, weathered patina. Let us know your preference when ordering.

How do you keep the pattern consistent across a large installation?

We match the pattern to your project drawings, or build a rendering based on the actual surface you're installing on before production. This lets us plan how the mottling and tonal variation should flow across multiple panels, so the finished wall or cladding reads as one coordinated surface rather than mismatched individual sheets.

How is an antique copper panel installed?

Antique copper sheets can be installed using screw fixing or adhesive bonding, depending on the application. Handle with clean gloves during transport to avoid fingerprints and uneven oxidation, and avoid dropping or impacting panels to protect the finish. What can damage the protective coating?
