316L Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

316L stainless steel, known as 1.4404 or AISI 316L, is an austenitic stainless steel with high chromium and molybdenum content and low carbon content. A low-carbon version of 316. This composition grants it superior corrosion resistance, particularly in harsh environments. The low carbon content enhances its weldability, reducing the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. Additionally, 316L maintains high yield and tensile strength when cold worked, comparable to those of duplex stainless steel grades, making it suitable for demanding applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and marine sectors.

Heat Resistance of 316L Stainless Steel

Suitable for continuous use between 425-860°C in corrosive environments, due to its carbide precipitation resistance.

Machinability of 316L Stainless Steel

Similar to 304, with good machinability. 316L requires sharp cutting tools and adequate lubrication.

Welding of 316L Stainless Steel

316L can be welded using all conventional techniques. Post-weld heat treatment is not necessary.

Hot Working of 316L Stainless Steel

The temperature range is 927-1204°C.

Annealing of 316L Stainless Steel

316L need to be anneal at 1038°C followed by rapid cooling.

Application Limitations of 316L Stainless Steel

Due to its lower tensile and yield strength compared to other grades, 304 stainless steel is less suitable for high-stress applications.

Heat Treatment of 316L Stainless Steel

Similar to 316 stainless steel, 316L is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking above 60°C.
