The low-carbon version of 316, also known as EN 1.4404. High chromium and molybdenum give superior corrosion resistance in harsh environments, and low carbon improves weldability by reducing carbide precipitation. Used across the chemical, pharmaceutical and marine sectors.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 316L behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Similar to 316, with better resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding because of the lower carbon.

Heat resistance

Suitable for continuous use at 425–860 °C in corrosive environments, thanks to its resistance to carbide precipitation.

Machining

Similar to 304. Use sharp tools and enough lubrication.

Welding

Welds with all conventional techniques. Post-weld heat treatment is not needed.

Hot working

927–1204 °C.

Annealing

1038 °C, then rapid cooling.

Heat treatment

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment; cold working raises its strength.

Limitations

Like 316, susceptible to stress corrosion cracking above 60 °C. Slightly lower strength than 316.

Buyers often weigh 316, 316L, 304 and 321. A simple way to choose.

316 or 316L?

Choose 316L for welded structures, and 316 for general applications in corrosive environments.

321 or 316L?

Use 321 for high-temperature applications, and 316L where chloride exposure is high or welding is needed.

316L or 304?

Choose 316L for marine or highly corrosive environments. 304 suits general-purpose use and costs less.

316L stainless steel FAQ.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 316L.

What does the L in 316L mean?

Low carbon: 0.03% max, against 0.08% for 316. It reduces carbide precipitation during welding, so welds keep their corrosion resistance.

Does 316L need post-weld heat treatment?

No. It welds with all conventional techniques without post-weld heat treatment.

Is 316L suitable for marine use?

Yes. High chromium and molybdenum give it superior corrosion resistance in harsh and chloride environments. It is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking above 60 °C.

What are the equivalents of 316L?

EN 1.4404, DIN X2CrNiMo17-12-2, JIS SUS316L and UNS S31603.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
