409L Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

The low-carbon, titanium-stabilized version of 409. Low carbon and nitrogen with titanium give it good corrosion resistance, weldability and formability at low cost. Used mainly in automotive exhaust systems, where it resists hot gas corrosion.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 409L behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Like 409, slightly better in some environments.

Heat resistance

Good oxidation resistance up to about 675 °C.

Machining

Moderate, similar to carbon steel.

Welding

Good weldability by all common methods. Titanium stabilization and low carbon mean post-weld annealing is normally not needed.

Hot working

816–1038 °C (1500–1900 °F). Do not work below 816 °C.

Annealing

815–845 °C, then air cooling.

Cold working

Possible, but less formable than 304.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

409L or 409?

The difference is carbon.

Composition

409L limits carbon to 0.030%; 409 allows up to 0.08%. Both allow up to 0.50% nickel and are stabilized with titanium.

Performance

Lower carbon gives 409L slightly better weldability and corrosion resistance. 409 also offers good high-temperature and corrosion resistance.

Cost

The two are close in price; choose 409L where welding quality matters most.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 409L.

Is 409L magnetic?

Yes. It is ferritic and magnetic.

Does 409L contain nickel?

Only as a residual, 0.50% max, the same limit as 409. It is a nickel-free grade by design.

What is 409L used for?

Mainly automotive exhaust systems, and other welded parts that need resistance to hot gas corrosion at low cost.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
