Main application

Why elevators use etched stainless steel.

Etched sheet is used in many interiors, but elevators are by far its biggest application — it covers what a car needs to look good and stay that way:

Decorative & custom — fine, consistent patterns over mirror, hairline or bead-blasted bases, finished in PVD black titanium, rose gold or champagne.

Hides fingerprints — the textured surface scatters light, so marks and light scratches show far less than on mirror; a quick wipe restores it.

Softer reflections — less glare than full mirror walls, so the car feels calmer and less cramped.

Signage built in — logos, floor numbers and notices etched into the panel last longer than print or stickers.

No stress on thin panels — etching is non-contact, so large, thin car panels stay flat.

Etched linen stainless steel.

Etching can also cut a fabric-like weave into the sheet. The texture has a hand feel close to an embossed finish, and most colors are applied with PVD — a soft, matte alternative to mirror etching for wall panels and furniture.

The process

What is etched stainless steel?

Etching removes material from a metal surface to leave a permanent pattern. Decorative etching uses chemical reaction, electrolysis or laser; photochemical and plasma etching serve fields that need precise patterns, such as semiconductors and electronic components.

Why chemical etching.

A chemical solution reacts with the steel to form the pattern — no physical force on the sheet.

No deformation

The pattern is not pressed in, so the sheet stays flat and keeps its original performance.

Etched into the steel itself — it will not distort even when the sheet is pressed.

Questions designers and buyers ask before specifying etched sheet.

How is the pattern made?

A chemical solution reacts with the exposed surface while the pattern area is protected, dissolving it to a controlled depth — typically 0.03–0.05 mm. Color is added afterwards, mostly by PVD coating.

Does chemical etching reduce corrosion resistance?

No. After etching, each sheet is treated and thoroughly cleaned so no residual solution stays on the surface. PVD coating, where used, adds a further protective layer.

Can I feel the pattern?

Yes — etched surfaces have real relief. Linen and antique etched sheets have the most pronounced hand feel; on mirror etched sheet the relief is shallower and the pattern shows mainly through contrast and reflection.

Elevator etched patterns (mirror or matte base) for elevator cars, landing doors and lobbies; etched linen for a soft, fabric-like matte surface; etched antique for an aged copper, bronze or brass look with depth.

Yes. Send a drawing or a vector file and we will check the line widths and quote a sample.

What thickness do I need?

For decorative panels, 0.5–2.0 mm is usually enough. Thinner sheets dent easily in handling; thicker ones are hard to process. Check the finished panel weight against what the wall or frame can carry.

Do I have to order a large quantity?

No. Start with samples or a small batch of cut sheets; larger orders follow when the project scales up.
