What 420J2 is, and where it is used.

A magnetic, hardenable steel for blades and tools.

General properties

Carbon 0.26–0.40% and chromium 12.0–14.0%, with smaller amounts of other elements. Magnetic, and hardens to HRC 52–55 after heat treatment.

Applications

Diving knives, kitchen knives, surgical instruments, hand tools, pump shafts, swords and daggers, for its hardness and durability.

Standards

JIS G4303 for bars, JIS G4304 for hot-rolled plate, sheet and strip, and JIS G4305 for cold-rolled plate, sheet and strip.

Corrosion and heat resistance.

Good in mild and domestic environments, limited at temperature extremes.

Corrosion resistance

Good in mild atmospheres and domestic environments
Resists diluted nitric acid, carbonic acid and ammonia
Resists crude oil, several petroleum products and steam
Resists detergent solutions, vinegar and food acids

Heat resistance

Good corrosion resistance at room temperature
Loses ductility at sub-zero temperatures
Loses strength at elevated temperatures through over-tempering

Processing 420J2.

Machine it soft, then harden and temper.

Machining

Easy to machine when annealed; harder to machine once hardened.

Welding

Possible, but avoid welding in the annealed, hardened or tempered condition to prevent brittleness and cold cracking. Preheat, control interpass temperature, cool very slowly and anneal after welding.

Hot working

Improves toughness and wear resistance.

Cold working

Increases hardness and strength, and improves surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

Annealing

Heat uniformly to 840–900 °C (1544–1652 °F) and hold until the section is uniform, then soak and cool.

Hardening

Heat to 950–1020 °C (1742–1868 °F), hold until uniform, then quench in oil or cool in air.

Tempering

Reduces brittleness and internal stress after hardening.

Hardness after treatment

HRC 52–55.

420, 420J1 and 420J2.

420J1 and 420J2 are branches of 420, made to meet different needs for hardness, strength and corrosion resistance. Adjusting the composition, above all the carbon, gives steels for different uses.

420J2 stainless steel FAQ.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 420J2.

What is the difference between 420J1 and 420J2?

420J2 has more carbon, 0.26–0.40%, so it reaches greater hardness and strength after heat treatment.

Is 420J2 magnetic?

Yes. It is a martensitic stainless steel and it is magnetic.

How hard can 420J2 get?

HRC 52–55 after heat treatment: heat to 950–1020 °C, quench in oil or cool in air, then temper.

Can 420J2 be welded?

Yes, with care. Avoid welding in the annealed, hardened or tempered condition; preheat, control interpass temperature, cool very slowly and anneal after welding to prevent cracking.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
