Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 409 behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Moderate: below 304, but suitable for mild environments and hot exhaust gas.

Heat resistance

Good oxidation resistance up to about 675 °C (1247 °F) in continuous service.

Machining

Moderate, similar to carbon steel. Proper lubrication and chip breakers help.

Welding

All standard methods. Titanium stabilization protects the weld zone; on thin gauges preheating and post-weld heat treatment are normally not needed.

Hot working

816–982 °C (1500–1800 °F); anneal afterwards.

Annealing

788–899 °C (1450–1650 °F), then cool.

Cold working

Cold works, with more force than austenitic grades.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment; cold work hardens it slightly.

304 or 409 for exhaust systems?

Pick by environment and budget.

304

18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel. Better corrosion resistance, especially against salt and industrial pollutants, with excellent formability and weldability. Higher cost. For high-performance, long-life exhausts and coastal use.

10.5–11.75% chromium, no added nickel. Good oxidation and corrosion resistance in hot exhaust conditions, up to about 675 °C in continuous service. Lower cost. For standard automotive exhausts without extreme exposure.

409 or 409L?

409L has less carbon, 0.030% max against 0.08%, so it welds and forms slightly better.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 409.

Is 409 magnetic?

Yes. It is a ferritic stainless steel and it is magnetic.

Does 409 rust?

It can develop light surface rust in wet or salty conditions, since it has only about 11% chromium. It keeps its strength and resists perforation, which is what exhaust systems need.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
