Grade 430, ferritic stainless steel

430 Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

A cost-effective, corrosion-resistant ferritic stainless steel for kitchen appliances, architectural elements and more. Its higher carbon and lack of stabilizing elements make it harder to weld; for welded parts, 439 or 441 is the better choice.

Why choose 430 stainless steel?

A cost-effective, corrosion-resistant material for uses from kitchen appliances to architectural elements.

Good corrosion resistance

Holds up in mildly corrosive environments, for kitchen utensils and appliances.

Cost-effective

More affordable than higher grades, with good performance at a lower cost.

Magnetic

Ferritic, so it is magnetic, unlike austenitic grades such as 304.

Formability

Good formability and ductility, easy to shape and fabricate.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 430 behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Good in mild atmospheres and fresh water. Less resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion than 304.

Heat resistance

Resists oxidation up to 870 °C.

Machining

Good machinability, similar to mild steel. Chip breakers and proper lubrication help.

Welding

Weldable with care, but welds lose ductility and corrosion resistance and need post-weld annealing. For welded parts, 439 or 441 avoids weld cracking and cuts risk and cost.

Hot working

816–1038 °C (1500–1900 °F). Anneal afterwards for maximum corrosion resistance.

Annealing

788–899 °C (1450–1650 °F), then slow cooling to prevent brittleness.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment; cold working hardens it slightly.

Cold working

Cold works well. It is ferritic, so it is magnetic in every condition.

430 stainless steel FAQ.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 430.

Does 430 stainless steel rust?

It can rust in harsh conditions such as high humidity or salty air. In less aggressive environments it resists rust and corrosion well, and regular cleaning helps prevent rust.

Can 430 stainless steel be welded?

Yes, with care. 430 is ferritic, with relatively high carbon and no stabilizing elements, so welds are prone to cracking and lose ductility and corrosion resistance. Post-weld annealing restores them, and weld seams need pickling or polishing. For welded parts, stabilized grades such as 439 and 441 weld better and keep their properties without extensive post-weld heat treatment.

What is the difference between 410 and 430?

410 has more carbon, so it is harder and stronger, especially after heat treatment, with better wear resistance but lower corrosion resistance; it suits cutlery and tools. 430 has less carbon, better corrosion resistance in non-aggressive environments, better formability and a lower cost; it suits kitchen appliances and automotive trim.

Is 430 food-grade stainless steel?

Yes. Its 16–18% chromium resists common food acids, and its smooth, non-porous surface is easy to clean. Corrosion resistance is slightly lower than 304, at a lower price, so it suits non-critical kitchenware and utensils.

Is 430 magnetic?

Yes. It is a ferritic stainless steel and is magnetic.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
