What Is Hammered Stainless Steel?

Hammered stainless steel is a decorative finish defined by a repeating pattern of shallow, rounded indentations across the surface — the look of metal that has been struck by hand. The texture scatters light in every direction, giving the sheet a deep, three-dimensional shimmer that flat finishes can't reproduce — which is exactly why it's become a go-to material for designers looking to add tactile depth and visual movement to a space.

Beyond looks, the texture earns its place functionally: the broken surface hides fingerprints, masks minor scratches, and disguises everyday wear — which is why it dominates high-traffic interiors like elevators, lobbies, and appliance panels. Built on 304 or 316 stainless, it keeps the corrosion resistance of the base metal while adding a finish that stays looking refined for years.

Texture & Pattern Types

The same process can deliver very different visual weight depending on the pattern scale — a key decision point for any design specification:

  • Large Hammered — bold, widely spaced marks; strong light-and-shadow contrast that reads from a distance. A statement texture for façades, feature walls, and elevator cabs.

  • Medium Hammered — the versatile choice; balances presence and subtlety across most applications.

  • Fine Hammered — dense, delicate marks; a refined texture built for close inspection. The designer's pick for appliance panels, furniture, and cabinetry.

  • Round vs. Irregular — uniform round indentations for a clean, ordered look, or randomized irregular marks for a handcrafted, artisanal character.

Designer Color & Finish Options

Hammered sheets can be PVD color-coated to open up a palette built for designers, not just decorators — antique gold, champagne bronze, black titanium, rose gold, and more, each developed to pair texture with tone. PVD color bonds at the molecular level, so it resists fading and abrasion far better than paint or coatings. Pair any color with the hammered texture for a finish that reads as intentional, not generic.

Guidance to Choose a Right Size for Your Hammered Stianless Sheets

  1. Before purchasing, you should estimate the overall weight of the finished decorative sheet and the load-bearing capacity of the application area to avoid overloading.

  2. Since decorative sheets are primarily used for aesthetic purposes, a smaller thickness is sufficient, which not only saves costs but also meets the requirements. Whether for indoor or outdoor use, the ideal thickness range for stainless steel decorative sheets is between 0.5mm and 2.0mm.
  • Sheets thinner than 0.5mm are too fragile and can be easily damaged during handling and manufacturing.
  • Sheets thicker than 2.0mm are difficult to process and challenging to use in practical applications.

Endless Possibilities with Hammered Stainless Steel Sheets

How the Hammered Texture Is Made

The hammered look isn't one fixed product — it's a surface effect, and the process behind it shapes the final character of the texture.
Embossed Hammered
Hand-Hammered

Embossed Hammered

Formed by rolling the sheet between patterned rollers under pressure. Consistent, repeatable, and efficient to produce at scale — this is the method behind most of our designer color finishes, giving architects and designers a dependable texture across large surface areas without sacrificing visual richness.

Hand-Hammered

Genuinely struck by hand, one mark at a time. No two sheets are identical, and the irregularity becomes the design statement. Reserved for feature pieces, art installations, and bespoke commissions where a one-of-a-kind surface is the point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hammered stainless steel show fingerprints?

The opposite of flat finishes — the broken texture scatters light and breaks up smudges, so fingerprints and minor scratches are far less visible. It's one of the main reasons designers specify it for high-traffic surfaces.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes. Specify 316 / 316L for coastal or high-humidity environments; 304 is fine for general exterior use. The hammered texture itself doesn't affect corrosion resistance.

What's the difference between embossed and hand-hammered?

Embossed delivers a consistent, repeatable texture suited to large-scale projects. Hand-hammered is struck one mark at a time, so no two pieces are identical — better suited to feature pieces and bespoke work. We'll advise based on your design.

Can the texture, color, or size be customized?

Yes. Pattern scale (large, medium, or fine hammered), PVD color, sheet thickness, and panel size can all be tailored to your project. Send us your specifications, or share a reference image, and we'll match it or recommend the closest option from our range.

What's the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on process and finish. Send us your project details and we'll confirm quickly.

How is hammered stainless steel sheet installed?

For wall and ceiling applications, installation is straightforward — sheets can be mounted directly using a specialized construction adhesive, no welding or visible fasteners required. This keeps the surface clean and lets the texture take center stage. For larger panels or structural applications, we can also advise on framing and mechanical fixing options based on your project.
