A ferritic stainless steel with 18% chromium, stabilized with titanium and niobium. Good oxidation and corrosion resistance, good high-temperature strength in exhaust gas, and good deep drawing, ductility and brightness. Weldable and resistant to stress corrosion cracking.

What 441 is, and where it is used.

Titanium and niobium make it weldable without post-weld heat treatment.

Stabilized

Titanium and niobium tie up carbon, so 441 welds well and resists intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

High-temperature strength

Good strength and oxidation resistance in hot exhaust gas.

Formable

Good deep drawing and ductility, with a bright surface.

Applications

Automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers and kitchen utensils.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 441 behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Good in mild environments, better than 409 and 430.

Heat resistance

Good oxidation resistance up to about 900 °C.

Machining

Moderate, similar to 430.

Welding

Good weldability by all common methods. No post-weld heat treatment needed.

Hot working

816–1038 °C (1500–1900 °F). Do not work below 816 °C.

Annealing

815–845 °C, then air cooling.

Cold working

Better formability than 430.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working.

441 is the cost-effective ferritic between 409 and 304.

441 vs 304

441 is ferritic and magnetic, with no nickel and good resistance to stress corrosion cracking. 304 is austenitic: better all-round corrosion resistance, higher ductility, easier to form and weld.

316, with nickel and molybdenum, resists chlorides and marine environments far better, at a higher price. 441 suits exhausts, heat exchangers and utensils.

441 vs 409

441 has about 18% chromium against 11%, so it resists corrosion and heat better and forms more easily. 409 is the lower-cost exhaust grade for mild conditions.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 441.

Is 441 magnetic?

Yes. It is a ferritic stainless steel and it is magnetic.

Does 441 need heat treatment after welding?

No. Titanium and niobium stabilization keep the weld zone sound without post-weld heat treatment.

304 or 441 for exhaust pipes?

441 is the cost-effective exhaust grade, with good strength and oxidation resistance in hot exhaust gas. 304 gives better overall corrosion resistance and ductility, at a higher cost.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
