Grade 310S, high-temperature austenitic stainless steel

310S Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

A low-carbon version of 310 with 25% chromium and 20% nickel, easier to form and weld. High creep strength, excellent oxidation resistance in mildly dry conditions up to 2000 °F (1093 °C), and good sulfur and carburizing resistance. Non-magnetic annealed and cold worked.

Why choose 310S stainless steel?

More chromium and nickel than 304/304L or 309, so it outperforms them in most environments.

High-temperature resistance

Continuous service up to about 1150 °C, for furnaces, heat exchangers and kiln linings.

Corrosion and oxidation resistance

Excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, above all at high temperature.

Strength and durability

High creep strength for parts under load at temperature, with long service life.

Weldable and formable

Low carbon makes it easier to form and weld than 310.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 310S behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, particularly at high temperatures.

Heat resistance

Continuous service up to about 1150 °C.

Machining

Fair, similar to 304. Carbide or ceramic tooling is recommended.

Welding

Weldable by all standard processes. Its high thermal expansion calls for care against warping and distortion.

Hot working

About 980–1175 °C (1800–2150 °F), followed by annealing.

Cold working

Possible, but not common given its work-hardening rate.

Annealing

1040–1120 °C (1900–2050 °F), then cool rapidly.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working.

310 or 310S?

Both are high-alloy austenitic steels with excellent heat and corrosion resistance.

The difference

Carbon. 310 allows up to 0.25%; 310S is limited to 0.08%, which improves weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

310

Suits high-strength service in extreme heat, such as furnaces.

310S

Suits uses that need both weldability and corrosion resistance, such as chemical processing and heat exchangers.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 310S.

Is 310S magnetic?

No. It is non-magnetic both annealed and cold worked.

Is 310S better than 309S?

At higher temperatures, yes: more chromium and nickel give 310S better oxidation resistance and creep strength. 309S costs less where its temperature range is enough.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
