Grade 321, titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel

321 Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

A chromium-nickel austenitic steel stabilized with titanium. Corrosion resistance similar to 304/304L, but titanium carbides form instead of chromium carbides at 427–816 °C (800–1500 °F), so it resists intergranular corrosion. Higher creep and stress-rupture strength than 304/304L, for parts that cannot be annealed after welding.

Why choose 321 stainless steel?

Intergranular corrosion resistance and stability at high temperature.

Intergranular corrosion resistance

Titanium stabilization keeps it resistant even after exposure in the carbide precipitation range.

High-temperature stability

Resists oxidation up to about 900 °C, with good creep and stress-rupture strength.

Mechanical properties

Strong and tough, with excellent low-temperature toughness, for high-stress uses.

Versatile

Welds and forms readily, for aerospace, chemical, and oil and gas applications.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 321 behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Similar to 304, with added resistance to intergranular corrosion from its titanium.

Heat resistance

Resists oxidation in intermittent service up to 900 °C and in continuous service up to 925 °C.

Machining

Similar to 304. It work-hardens, so it machines less easily than 410, and titanium carbides add tool wear.

Welding

Weldable by all common methods, and needs no post-weld annealing: titanium keeps the weld zone resistant to intergranular corrosion.

Cold working

Forms readily, like 304; cold work raises its strength.

Annealing

Solution anneal at about 950–1120 °C and cool rapidly. A stabilizing treatment at 850–930 °C can be applied where specified.

Hardening

Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, only by cold working.

321 or another grade?

Pick by what the application demands.

321 vs 304

321 resists intergranular corrosion better after high-temperature exposure and holds its properties at higher temperatures. 304 costs less for general use.

304

321 vs 316

316, with molybdenum, resists corrosion better overall, above all in marine and chloride environments. 321 is better for high-temperature stability and intergranular corrosion resistance.
Explore
316

Takeaway

321 for high temperatures and welded parts that cannot be annealed; 316 for aggressive corrosion; 304 for cost-effective, less demanding service.

321 stainless steel FAQ.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 321.

Why is titanium added to 321?

Titanium combines with carbon to form titanium carbides, so chromium carbides do not form at grain boundaries at 427–816 °C. That keeps 321 resistant to intergranular corrosion.

Does 321 need annealing after welding?

No. It suits welded parts that cannot be annealed afterwards.

Is 321 magnetic?

No, not in the annealed condition.

How hot can 321 go?

It resists oxidation up to 900 °C intermittently and 925 °C continuously.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
