201 Stainless Steel Coils and Sheets ( J1, J2, J3, J4 )

Grade 201 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel that contains lower nickel (about 1%) and higher amounts of manganese and nitrogen. It is designed as a lower-cost alternative to the 300 series stainless steels, with its nickel content halved and replaced with more affordable manganese. This substitution results in lower corrosion resistance compared to other stainless steel grades, but it is more economical. As a low-cost alternative to grades 304 and 301, this type of stainless steel provides comparable corrosion resistance and formability, making it a cost-effective option.

201 Stainless Steel Processing

Forming: Grade 201 stainless steel can be formed using all commonly employed forming methods, similar to 300 series stainless steels.
Welding: It can be welded using all conventional welding techniques.
Hot Working: The hot working temperature range is 1149-1232°C (2100-2250°F).
Annealing: The annealing temperature is 1010-1093°C (1850-2000°F). The temperature should not exceed 2000°F to avoid scaling, and rapid cooling is required to prevent the crystallization of carbides.

J1, J2, J3, J4 for SS201

In China, grade 201 stainless steel includes five types: J1, J2, J3, and J4, each with different compositions and applications. Among them, 201 J1 is the general sense of 201, which meets the standards of ASTM A240, ASTM A666, and ASME SA240. The J-series types have similar nickel and chromium content but differ significantly in carbon and copper content.

When selecting a 201 stainless steel type, J1 is suitable for general shallow drawing applications, J2 is hard but not suitable for bending, J3 is suitable for lightly machined structures, and J4 is best suited for complex deep drawing products.
