Grade 410S, low-carbon 12% chromium stainless steel

410S Stainless Steel Coil and Sheet

A low-carbon, non-hardening version of 410. It gives up some hardness and strength for better weldability, toughness and formability, and suits automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers and other parts that must be welded and formed.

Weldability and toughness are its key advantages.

Less carbon than 410, so it stays tough and weldable.

Weldable

With carbon at 0.08% max, 410S does not harden much when cooled from welding temperatures, so welds are tougher and less prone to cracking than on 410.

Formable

Lower hardness and strength than 410, with better formability.

Applications

Automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers and other welded or formed parts.

Corrosion, heat and the shop floor.

How 410S behaves in service and in fabrication.

Corrosion resistance

Good in mild environments, slightly better than 410 thanks to its lower carbon.

Heat resistance

Withstands service temperatures slightly above 410's limit of about 650 °C.

Machining

Machines well when annealed: drilling, milling, turning and tapping. Use sharp tools and suitable speeds.

Welding

Weldable by SMAW, TIG and MIG. Preheating to 150–260 °C and low-carbon filler help on heavier sections.

Hot working

870–1200 °C (1600–2200 °F), by forging, hot rolling or extrusion.

Annealing

About 760–870 °C (1400–1600 °F), then slow, controlled cooling.

Hardening

Not usefully hardenable by heat treatment; its low carbon keeps it soft. Choose 410 where hardness is needed.

410S stainless steel FAQ.

Questions buyers ask before ordering 410S.

What is the difference between 410 and 410S?

410S has less carbon, 0.08% max against 0.08–0.15%. It is softer and does not harden usefully, but it welds better, is tougher and forms more easily.

Can 410 and 410S be used interchangeably?

Often, since their chemistry is similar. Choose 410 where hardness and strength matter, 410S where the part is welded or formed.

Is 410S magnetic?

Yes. It is magnetic.

What is 410S used for?

Automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers and other parts that need good weldability and toughness.

What sizes do you supply?

Coil in 1000, 1219, 1240 and 1500 mm widths or slit to size, 0.15–3.0 mm thick. Sheet in the same widths, 2000 to 3048 mm long, 0.3–3.0 mm thick.
