Hammering Technique, Different Hammered Patterns

The character of a hammered finish comes down to the craters struck into the surface — their shape, size, and how densely they're packed together. Small, tight craters read as fine and subtle; larger, irregular ones create a bolder, more sculptural surface. The process behind the strike matters too: embossed hammering presses the sheet between patterned rollers for a consistent, repeatable texture suited to large-scale architectural runs, while hand-hammered sheets are struck one mark at a time, so no two panels come out identical — reserved for feature pieces and bespoke commissions.

Beyond a single generic "hammered" look, we produce five distinct patterns — Meteorite, Honeycomb, Tortoise Shell, Bush Hammered, and Reverse Hammered, — each defined by its own crater shape and size, not just its finish color.

Meteorite hammered stainless steel.

Meteorite Hammered is our most popular hammered pattern — a field of irregular craters that resembles the pitted surface left by meteorite impacts. Crater depth varies with hammering force, so we offer it in two grades: Fine Hammer, with craters around 0.3–0.5 cm in diameter, and Deep Fine Hammer, struck harder for a more dramatic, deeper impression at the same crater size range.

Honeycomb hammered stainless steel.

Honeycomb Hammered presses larger, more uniform craters — roughly 1 cm in diameter, mixed with smaller 0.5 cm craters — arranged tightly together to reproduce the packed, six-sided cell structure of a real honeycomb. It reads as denser and more geometric than Meteorite.

Tortoise shell hammered stainless steel.

Tortoise Shell Hammered mimics the cracked, plated pattern on a tortoise's back. Unlike Honeycomb, the cells are not laid out in a tight geometric grid — the craters are rounder and more irregular in size and spacing, at roughly 0.5 cm in diameter.

Reverse hammered stainless steel.

Reverse Hammered flips the standard process: instead of striking the front face to press craters inward, the sheet is hammered from the back, so the pattern pushes outward and sits proud of the surface — a raised, convex version of a tortoise-shell pattern rather than the recessed craters found in our other hammered finishes.

Bush hammered stainless steel.

Bush Hammered reproduces the surface left by a bush hammer — a tool with a pyramid-studded, pointed head traditionally used to texture concrete and stone. Because the tool head is fine and pointed rather than rounded, the resulting texture is made up of pinhead-sized points rather than visible craters, giving a much finer, grainier surface than our other hammered patterns.

Where Hammered Stainless Steel Is Used

Hammered stainless steel earns its place on any surface that gets touched, leaned on, or looked at up close — the broken texture hides fingerprints and scuffs while giving designers a tactile finish flat sheet can't match. A few places it shows up most in our projects:

Architectural cladding & walls
Feature walls, elevator car and lobby panels, façade cladding — large, continuous surfaces where a consistent texture needs to hold up across many sheets without visible seams.

Bar fronts, counters & backsplashes
A hammered surface reads as a single unified panel rather than tiled sections with visible joints, which is why it's a common choice for bar fronts, counter facing, and kitchen backsplashes in hospitality and retail fit-outs.

Doors & cabinetry
Applied as a cladding layer over elevator doors, cabinet fronts, and wardrobe panels — the texture adds depth without changing the panel's structural core.

Kitchen hoods & equipment housings
Commercial kitchen hoods and equipment enclosures benefit from the same fingerprint-hiding property that makes hammered finishes popular in high-traffic interiors — useful anywhere a surface gets touched constantly and still needs to look clean.

Sinks & basins
Hammered stainless steel is a common choice for sinks and wash basins in hospitality and residential projects — the textured surface disguises water spotting and everyday scuffs better than a flat mirror or satin finish, while keeping the corrosion resistance of the base grade.

Lighting fixtures
Pendant and wall-light housings in hammered stainless steel use the surface's dimpled texture to scatter and diffuse light, giving fixtures a warmer, more dimensional glow than a flat or mirror-polished shade.

Furniture & tabletop panels
Desk and tabletop cladding, reception counters, and other furniture-grade panels where the hammered texture becomes the visual centerpiece of the piece.

How the Hammered Texture Is Made

The hammered look isn't one fixed product — it's a surface effect, and the process behind it shapes the final character of the texture.

Embossed Hammered

Formed by rolling the sheet between patterned rollers under pressure. Consistent, repeatable, and efficient to produce at scale — this is the method behind most of our designer color finishes, giving architects and designers a dependable texture across large surface areas without sacrificing visual richness.

Hand-Hammered

Genuinely struck by hand, one mark at a time. No two sheets are identical, and the irregularity becomes the design statement. Reserved for feature pieces, art installations, and bespoke commissions where a one-of-a-kind surface is the point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hammered stainless steel show fingerprints?

The opposite of flat finishes — the broken texture scatters light and breaks up smudges, so fingerprints and minor scratches are far less visible. It's one of the main reasons designers specify it for high-traffic surfaces.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes. Specify 316 / 316L for coastal or high-humidity environments; 304 is fine for general exterior use. The hammered texture itself doesn't affect corrosion resistance.

What's the difference between embossed and hand-hammered?

Embossed delivers a consistent, repeatable texture suited to large-scale projects. Hand-hammered is struck one mark at a time, so no two pieces are identical — better suited to feature pieces and bespoke work. We'll advise based on your design.

Can the texture, color, or size be customized?

Yes. Pattern scale (large, medium, or fine hammered), PVD color, sheet thickness, and panel size can all be tailored to your project. Send us your specifications, or share a reference image, and we'll match it or recommend the closest option from our range.

What's the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on process and finish. Send us your project details and we'll confirm quickly.

How is hammered stainless steel sheet installed?

For wall and ceiling applications, installation is straightforward — sheets can be mounted directly using a specialized construction adhesive, no welding or visible fasteners required. This keeps the surface clean and lets the texture take center stage. For larger panels or structural applications, we can also advise on framing and mechanical fixing options based on your project.
